1. SEC & SEDAR Filings
RoyaltyStat’s primary data comes from parsing millions of SEC exhibits (including 10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks) and SEDAR filings. Since around mid‑August 1996, they’ve scanned ~16.5 million exhibits, identifying ~15,500 to 17,500 unredacted license agreements containing royalty rates. These filings provide validated contractual terms—licensor/licensee, royalty %, exclusivity, territory, duration, and patent numbers where applicable.
2. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests
RoyaltyStat supplements SEC data by submitting FOIA requests to access additional license agreements. Their FOIA-derived corpus includes 3,800+ agreements, often unredacted, enhancing global and historical coverage.
3. Automation + Human Curation
Automated text‑mining searches first detect potential license agreements in filings. A dedicated analyst team then manually screens ~75K candidate documents, extracts ~57K confirmed agreements, and applies 3‑layer quality assurance to ensure data accuracy and remove duplicates.
4. Global and Historical Breadth
RoyaltyStat’s database spans 40+ industries, 100+ countries, with agreements dating back to the 1960s, providing over 50 years of historical data. As of the latest counts: 17,500+ agreements, ~15,500–17,500 royalty‑bearing, and ~17,500–35,295+ royalty rate observations, covering diverse IP types.
5. Structured Metadata & Analytics
Extracted fields include royalty base, percentage rates, exclusivity, territory, patent linkage, contract duration, and calculation structure. The platform offers analytical tools like histograms, box-plots, regression analysis, and filters for OECD transfer pricing compliance.
6. Daily Updates & Continuous Expansion
RoyaltyStat adds ~100 new agreement records monthly, delivering daily updates of new filings and FOIA-retrieved documents.
